Literature Text

You reached under your bed, pulling out a faded blue duffel bag. The zipper was stuck, but after a few moments of frustrated prying, you managed to yank it open wide enough to fill it with clothes and toiletries to last a week.

Lastly, you grabbed your backpack and placed two flashlights, a pack of batteries, your new video camera, and a pocket knife inside.

Perfect for your scary outing.

Zipping up both bags you placed them by the door. Flopping down on the bed and opening your laptop, you opened the search bar to find more scary stories to tell at your cousins' house.

But instead of a story, strangely, you came across a news article. A real one.

"Ominous unknown killer at large?" Your eyes rolled, "Ominous, unknown... who writes this shit?"

Before you could click on it you heard your mother calling you for dinner. Placing the laptop in your backpack and shuffling down the hall, you attempted to slide down the stairway rail but gave up after nearly falling to your death. Your mother was standing impatiently in the kitchen, briskly handing you a plate and two takeout boxes of Chinese. As you sat down at the table and poured the contents on your plate, your mother barely touched her food. She just continued typing away on her phone. Business as usual.
You were nearly finished before she finally spoke to you.

"Remember that I'm going to be out in Seattle for the next few days. Your Aunt and Uncle agreed that you could stay for a week or more, depending on how my meetings play out."

You took a sip of water and nodded. "Mhm."

"If anything serious happens you call me. I might not pick up right away but I'll call you back when I'm available."

Your mother set her phone down and flagged you upstairs.

"Go grab your things. I'll be in the car."

"Hey!"

You slid out of the passenger side and stood as your cousin Hannah ran up to the car, wrapping you in a hug that would make a boa constrictor feel like a rubber band. Her older brother Carter followed behind, much less overenthusiastic than his younger sister; he ruffled your hair a bit and offered to carry your duffel bag.

You smiled or winced at the soreness of your arms, you couldn't tell which, following them inside. "Hey, guys."

As you entered the house and heard silence you raised a brow.

"Where's Uncle Tony and Aunt Karen?"

Carter adjusted his blue square-framed glasses. "He's working late today. Should be back by nine. Mom's at the grocery store."

Carter looked just the same as always. Same dishwater brown hair and hazel eyes as his sister. One would have thought they were twins.

Oh, that ear piercing was new. You made a mental note to tease him about it later. Hannah was the same age as you and always wore her hair in two dutch braids that she constantly flipped over her shoulders.

Following Hanna to her bedroom, you noticed the changes she'd made over the year. Walls covered with anime and band posters, skateboards propped on a display, and multicolored beanbags surrounding a gaming station filled with what you assumed was every system that existed.

You sank down in a red bean bag with a 'hiss' and pulled out the laptop from your backpack, waking up the monitor. The screen showed the same news article you'd never finished. You figured you'd share it with your cousins later.

Carter belly-flopped on a green bean bag. "Got any new scary stories for us?"

"You know it. But I think we should check out that abandoned warehouse you mentioned last week off the turnpike. We can play Friday The 13th and I'll read some stories later tonight.”

"Good idea, let's go right now!" Hannah grabbed her leather bomber jacket from the closet and her flashlight.

You stood and closed your laptop, reaching into your duffel bag and pulling out your camera, flashlights, and pocket knife.

Carter left the room for a few moments and came back with a backpack, taking the flashlights and putting them in his bag along with some matches and snacks.

You were still wearing your jacket, so you just grabbed your shoes and laced them.

Carter glanced down at his phone. “I got a compass and a GPS. Ready?”

“My legs are killing me!”

“Shh!”

"See anything yet?"

"Yeah, but it's getting dark." You pushed through some tangled shrubs in your way. “Turn on a flashlight.”

There it was, in the clearing. The abandoned warehouse. It was a bit dilapidated. Weatherworn, but not falling apart. There was a set of large doors that were slightly ajar. The walls were rusted and weeds grew freely around the base of the building. On the top floors were a few foggy windows, one was smashed open.

"Finally!" Hannah cried, running for the doors and yanking them open. She stepped inside and you and Carter followed.

The interior was messy, as an abandoned warehouse should be. Old papers and random trash blown about the room, broken glass glistened on the floor, no lights were on. You could see plants growing through the cracks in the concrete floor.

Everyone turned on their flashlights and you pulled out your video camera and began to record.

"It's hella creepy in here." You whispered, noticing a table and chairs in the middle of the room with old tools and rope sitting on it.

You went over to the table and set the video camera down quietly, turning it to face the rest of the room.

Perfect time to scare Hannah and Carter.

You changed the camera setting to night vision.

Turning off your flashlight and going completely silent, you backed away and hid in the opposite corner and waited.

"Why is there dried bl-" Hanna paused for a moment, glancing behind her.  "____? Where are you at?’’

Both Carter and Hannah were alert now, shining their flashlights around the room and calling for you. You tried not to snicker too loud.

Carter’s flashlight beam finally hit you, revealing your silhouette, facing the wall and shaking. You turned, head down, and slowly inched towards them, chuckling like a maniac.

"Don't play like that!" Hannah wailed, backing away and shining her flashlight in your eyes.

You laughed louder and reached for Carter, who skidded back.

"Dude, you gotta chill with that."

Hannah was on the verge of tears before you fell on your bottom and started laughing at them.

"You guys were so scared! You should've seen your faces. Like, c’mon."

Hannah breathed a sigh of relief and Carter sucked his teeth stubbornly.

"I wasn't scared."

"Sure." You grinned, walking back to the table and retrieving your camera.

"Let's head home, I wanna watch the video footage."

You crunched on popcorn as you watched the recording of scaring Carter and Hannah.

They commended you for your acting and laughed along with you.

Carter snorted, "Hannah, why do you always have to screech like a monkey when you’re scared?"

Hannah puffed up her cheeks and pouted.

"She almost made me pee myself! What was I supposed to do?"

You smirked and continued watching the video. The warehouse really was creepy, like something out of a slasher-horror film.

As the footage neared its end as you walked to retrieve the camera from the table, you saw something you hadn't noticed before, in the left corner of the screen.

Someone was standing in the doorway behind Carter.

You lifted a hand. "Guys, wait a second."

Grabbing the remote control and rewinding the video, you paused it when the figure first appeared. You weren't mistaken. A dark figure moved in the frame five seconds after Hannah yelled your name. You couldn't make out a face, but it wasn’t someone you knew.

"What is that?" Carter furrowed his brows.

You gulped audibly. "I have no idea,

but we're going back to that warehouse."

This the freshly revised version of chapter 1. You'll notice that I changed the readers parental figure to mother. This wont impact the plot much, it was just a personal preference. Don't worry, Jeff will appear in the next chapter.
